Therapy to support children and adolescents through emotional and behavioural challenges

When a child or teenager is struggling, it can affect the whole family. You may be noticing big emotions, behavioural changes, school difficulties, or withdrawal — and feeling unsure how to help.

We provide psychological therapy for children and adolescents in a calm, supportive environment. Our work focuses on understanding what’s going on beneath the surface and supporting young people to feel safer, more regulated, and better understood.

When children and teens might need support

Families often reach out when a child or adolescent is experiencing:

  • big or hard-to-manage emotions
  • anxiety or worry that interferes with daily life
  • behavioural challenges at home or school
  • difficulties with friendships or social situations
  • school stress, avoidance, or emotional shutdown
  • challenges related to neurodiversity

Sometimes these concerns have been present for a long time. Other times, they emerge during periods of change or increased demand.

Understanding before fixing

Children and adolescents don’t always have the words to explain what they’re feeling. Behaviour, emotions, and withdrawal are often ways of communicating distress.

Therapy at Zen Society starts with understanding — taking time to learn about a young person’s world, their relationships, and the challenges they’re facing. From there, we work gently to support emotional regulation, confidence, and connection.

How we work with children and adolescents

Our work may involve:

  • helping young people understand and manage emotions
  • supporting emotional regulation and coping skills
  • exploring behaviour in the context of development and environment
  • working with parents to better understand and support their child
  • collaborating with schools or other professionals when helpful

We tailor sessions to a child or adolescent’s age, needs, and developmental stage, using evidence-based approaches in a way that feels approachable and respectful.

Supporting parents and families in Gold Coast

When a child is struggling, parents often carry a lot — worry, self-doubt, exhaustion, and pressure to “get it right”.

Where appropriate, therapy involves working with parents alongside the child. This helps build shared understanding and supports changes that can be carried into everyday life at home.

A safe, calm environment for young people

Our clinic is designed to feel welcoming and non-threatening. We aim to create a space where children and adolescents feel comfortable enough to engage at their own pace.

There’s no pressure to talk about everything straight away. Building trust takes time, and we respect that.

Taking the next step

If you’re concerned about your child or teenager and wondering whether therapy could help, you don’t have to decide alone.

We’re happy to talk things through and answer questions before you book.
