Cognitive and learning assessments to better understand how your child learns

If your child is finding school harder than expected — academically, emotionally, or behaviourally — a cognitive or learning assessment can help clarify what’s getting in the way and what support may be helpful.

We provide evidence-based cognitive and learning assessments for children and adolescents. These assessments are designed to better understand how a child thinks, learns, and processes information, so families and schools can make more informed decisions moving forward.

What is a cognitive or learning assessment?

A cognitive or learning assessment is a structured process that helps build a clearer picture of how a child learns, thinks, and solves problems.

Depending on the referral questions, an assessment may explore areas such as:

general cognitive functioning

attention and working memory

processing speed

problem-solving and reasoning

academic skills related to reading, writing, or maths

At Zen Society, assessments are guided by evidence-based tools and current best practice. We aim to understand both strengths and challenges, rather than focusing on difficulties alone.

Cognitive and learning assessments for children and adolescents

Learning challenges can affect more than just school results. Over time, they may also impact:

confidence and self-esteem
motivation and engagement
emotional wellbeing
behaviour at home or school

Our assessments consider a child’s developmental stage, learning environment, and emotional wellbeing. Where appropriate, information from parents, teachers, and schools is included to build a well-rounded understanding.

What to expect from the assessment process

We aim to keep the process clear, supportive, and transparent.

01.

Initial appointment

We spend time understanding your concerns, your child’s learning history, and current challenges.

02.

Assessment sessions

Standardised assessment tools are selected based on age, needs, and referral questions.

03.

Feedback and report

Findings are explained in plain language. A written report is provided where appropriate.

04.

Practical recommendations

Recommendations may include learning supports, school adjustments, or therapeutic options where relevant.

You’ll have time to ask questions and discuss how the information can be used in a practical way.

A calm, child-focused approach

We understand that learning assessments can feel stressful for families — particularly when school has already been a source of tension or worry.

Our approach is:

warm and respectful

child-centred

focused on clarity, not labelling

We don’t rush the process, and we aim to make sure you leave with clarity rather than confusion.

Do I need a referral?

A GP referral is not required to book a cognitive or learning assessment with us. If you have reports or information from schools or other professionals, these can be shared as part of the assessment process.

Taking the next step

If you’re wondering whether a cognitive or learning assessment could be helpful for your child, we’re happy to talk it through.
